Well said! I feel like it's the "empire builders" that are most dangerous - the megalomaniacs who's sole drive is fame. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters are results. Everything else is fluff.

Great post!

Thou shalt not judge. I certainly believe in charging what your worth but I certainly believe there is room to speak at free events as well without being looked down upon because for the last decade I have worked with speakers I have seen so many make more at free events then they could have dreamed of in getting a fee, there is nothing wrong with doing free events once in a while.

It’s all about being smart and leveraging the opportunity correctly. If done properly yes one can make a lot more than any speaking fee could demand.

One should not judge another by whether they speak for free or not or if their time is of less value to them. I can tell you that there are many, many talented speakers out there that speak for free (maybe not always for free) but they certainly are not ashamed to have any “label” on them.

Too many speakers get caught up and worried about what their “peers” may think if they speak at a free event so they don’t do it…bad mistake.

Your time is as valuable as my time, your time is as valuable as the next speaker and the next whether for free or fee, whether new or seasoned…what matters is that you have heart, that you are genuine and that you have a message that will solve their audiences problem…that’s it. I don’t think you should be concerned or get caught up in worrying about being labeled a “free speaker”

Once I joined NSA one of the first questions I had was about free vs paid speaking engagements. All of my members (verbally) smacked my hand and pointed out that I was a professional now. I don't speak for free anymore. In certain situations where there is marketing benefit (as you have listed above) I may chooses to "defer" my fee. But as a pro I no longer want to be identified as a "free speaker". Leave that to other people that don't value their time as much.

Thanks for sharing your ideas.
